What do counselors do?High school (youth), college, and adult staff make up the counselors and coordinators of the camp. Youth staff will serve primarily as counselors and small group leaders, supervising and facilitating all camper activities, as well as participating in activities with them. Campers are ages 6-14 years. Each day begins with a program time designed around a religious theme. Activities may include program skits and small group discussion, swimming, arts and crafts, sports & games (i.e. flag football, basketball, parachute, volley ball) singing, and meals. Counselors have a substantial amount of responsibility placed on them for the well being of the campers and the facilitation of the camp. The staff will live together for the week of the project, camping on a gym floor – girls in one gym, boys in another. We use the gym shower facilities and eat and “live” in the cafeteria area. Meals are donated and cooked at the school, although some nights we will be hosted by area churches or will go out to eat. The staff will meet together each night to check in and share their experiences of the day. There is an evening worship service and curfew is early, as the day starts early! While adult, college, and youth staff will do all the things that make a day camp a day camp, what they will really do is form positive relationships that will significantly impact their lives and the lives of the campers. This fact is exhibited in the exchange of addresses and tearful goodbyes on the last day of camp. The need and desire of the community for this experience is also indicated by campers who claim to be older or younger than they really are so that they can gain admittance to the camp. |
