What's the camp like?Everyday the camp staff greets the buses full of campers to get things started around 8:30 in the morning. The camp is split into two groups – the upper camp for older campers and the lower camp for younger campers. Then we play some, sing some, and gather together to listen and learn about God’s love. Our schedule looks a little like this –
Everyday we get a chance to do some new activities. They have ranged from special art projects to drum workshops to dance instruction to basketball. And we SWIM! Swimming is a very big part of this camp because there is no pool in Sawyerville, so this is the only opportunity some of these campers get to go swimming! Our day with the campers ends around 3:00pm when we say goodbye to them as they leave to go home on the buses. The campers come each day for a week – Monday through Friday. For the staff the day is a little bit longer. Each camp staff gathers together in the afternoon to see how the day went and begin our work for the next day’s camp. We have been lucky to have generous groups let us use their facilities for the camp site, so we spend time everyday making sure that we have cleaned up after ourselves and made sure the site is as we found it. After our supper each night the entire camp staff comes together to share their experience of the day and to worship together. The camp staff also comes in a few days early to set up for the camp. On the Sunday before the camp begins we register all the campers for camp and make sure they have everything they need for the week – bookbags, bathing suits, towels, water bottles, and many other things. We also stay for a few days after the camp ends to clean everything up and bring it back with us. |
